You can already participate in meetings, give presentations and discuss complex issues in Swedish. Yet you may still hesitate over certain prepositions, miss the meaning of a particle verb or feel that your spoken Swedish does not quite have the same rhythm and nuance as that of native speakers.
At an advanced level, progress is no longer primarily about learning more basic rules. Instead, you need to become better at choosing the right expressions, structuring longer arguments and using stress and intonation to communicate your intended meaning.
In our advanced Swedish lessons, we therefore work with areas such as prepositions, particle verbs, linking words and Swedish speech melody. These four areas can help you progress from having a solid command of Swedish to expressing yourself with greater precision, coherence and nuance.
What does learning Swedish at an advanced level involve?
At B1 and B2 levels, you can normally understand and discuss both concrete and abstract topics. You have a broad vocabulary and can express relatively complex ideas.
The challenge is often to use the language with greater confidence and precision. This may involve being able to:
- choose a natural preposition
- understand common particle verbs in fast speech
- develop and structure an argument
- adapt your language to the situation
- use stress to highlight important information
- recognise nuances, attitudes and implied meanings
Small linguistic choices therefore become increasingly important. A single word or a change in stress can affect how an entire sentence is interpreted.
Prepositions: small words that add precision
Swedish prepositions do not always correspond directly to English prepositions or their equivalents in other languages. It is therefore often more useful to learn complete combinations than to translate each preposition separately.
Compare the following expressions:
- vara ansvarig för ett projekt
- vara medveten om en risk
- vara beroende av ett beslut
- vara stolt över ett resultat
- vara trött på en situation
- bidra till en förändring
- bestå av flera delar
- skilja mellan två alternativ
For an advanced learner, knowing the basic meaning of a preposition is not always enough. You also need to know which verbs, nouns and adjectives it commonly combines with.
The difference between i and på
The Swedish prepositions i and på, for example, can express different perspectives on time:
– Jag arbetade i två timmar.
Here, i describes how long the activity continued.
– Jag gjorde klart rapporten på två timmar.
Here, på describes how long it took to achieve the result.
– Jag har inte arbetat på två timmar.
In a negative sentence, på describes how long something has not happened.
In our lessons, we therefore do more than study individual rules. We collect useful combinations and apply them in situations that are relevant to the learner, such as presentations, meetings and problem-solving discussions.
Particle verbs: when stress changes the meaning
Particle verbs consist of a verb and a stressed particle. Together, they often have a meaning that is not obvious from the individual words.
Some common examples are:
- gå IGENOM en rapport
- följa UPP ett beslut
- lägga FRAM ett förslag
- komma FRAM TILL en lösning
- ta UPP en fråga
- ställa IN ett möte
- skjuta UPP en deadline
- lägga NER ett projekt
Stress is important because the same word can function as an ordinary preposition in another sentence:
– Han slog PÅ datorn.
Here, slå på means to switch something on.
– Han slog på BORDET.
Here, på bordet tells us where he hit.
Another clear example is:
– Jag hälsade PÅ Anna.
This means that I visited Anna.
– Jag hälsade på ANNA.
This means that I greeted Anna when I met her.
When listening to Swedish, you therefore need to recognise both the words and the stress pattern. In our lessons, we practise particle verbs through short dialogues, listening exercises and realistic conversations. The learner first identifies the meaning and then uses the expression in a context of their own.
Linking words: show how your ideas connect
At an advanced level, you need to be able to develop an argument rather than simply produce individual, grammatically correct sentences. Linking words help the listener or reader understand the relationship between your ideas.
| Function | Examples |
|---|---|
| Addition | dessutom, därutöver, inte minst |
| Contrast | däremot, dock, trots det |
| Cause | eftersom, på grund av, mot bakgrund av |
| Result | därför, därmed, följaktligen |
| Clarification | med andra ord, närmare bestämt |
| Giving examples | till exempel, exempelvis, bland annat |
| Structure | inledningsvis, därefter, avslutningsvis |
Compare these sentences:
– Vi ändrade tidsplanen. Kunden var orolig.
The message is understandable, but the relationship between the sentences is not entirely clear. By adding a linking word, we can show whether the second sentence expresses a cause, a contrast or a result:
– Vi ändrade tidsplanen eftersom kunden var orolig.
– Kunden var orolig. Därför ändrade vi tidsplanen.
– Kunden var orolig. Vi behöll trots det den ursprungliga tidsplanen.
It is also important to choose linking words that suit the situation. Så is common in everyday speech, whereas därför, därmed and följaktligen may be more appropriate in a formal argument or discussion.
The aim is not to use the most advanced words possible. The aim is to make your reasoning clear and choose a style that suits the context.
Swedish speech melody: when word accent determines meaning
Swedish pronunciation is not only about individual sounds. Stress, rhythm and pitch help the listener interpret both individual words and complete sentences.
Swedish has two tonal word accents, commonly referred to as accent 1 and accent 2. The difference is not visible in writing, but it can distinguish between two words with the same spelling.
| Word form | Accent 1 | Accent 2 |
|---|---|---|
| tomten | the plot of land on which the house stands, from tomt | Santa Claus, from tomte |
| anden | the bird, from and | a spirit or ghost, from ande |
| tanken | a tank or container, from tank | an idea or thought, from tanke |
| skeden | the spoon you eat with, from sked | different phases or stages, from skede |
| stegen | several steps | the ladder you climb, from stege |
| värden | the person receiving guests, from värd | several values, from värde |
A useful rule of thumb is that the definite form of a one-syllable base word often has accent 1:
- tomt → tomten
- and → anden
- tank → tanken
In these examples, words derived from a two-syllable base word have accent 2:
- tomte → tomten
- ande → anden
- tanke → tanken
The way these tonal accents sound varies between Swedish dialects. In real conversations, context also almost always helps us understand which meaning is intended. The goal is therefore not to imitate a single “correct” Swedish speech melody, but to become aware of how pitch and stress can carry meaning.
Stress within the sentence
Sentence stress can also change the message:
– JAG skickade rapporten i går.
I sent it, not somebody else.
– Jag skickade RAPPORTEN i går.
I sent the report, not the budget or the presentation.
– Jag skickade rapporten I GÅR.
I sent it yesterday, not today.
By stressing the most important information, you help the listener follow your reasoning. This makes your speech clearer and reduces the risk of misunderstandings.
From correct to nuanced Swedish
These four areas often work together within the same sentence.
A learner might initially say:
– Vi tittade på förslaget. Det fanns ett problem. Vi ändrade planen. Kunden var nöjd.
The message works, but it can be developed:
– När vi gick IGENOM förslaget upptäckte vi däremot ett problem med tidsplanen. Vi lade därför OM arbetet, vilket kunden blev nöjd med.
This version includes:
- the particle verbs gå igenom and lägga om
- the prepositional combinations problem med and nöjd med
- the linking words däremot and därför
- stress to highlight the particles and new information
The result is a more coherent and precise message.
How we work in advanced Swedish lessons
An advanced lesson is usually based on a specific communicative goal. The learner may want to present a project, argue in favour of a solution, participate actively in meetings or understand colleagues when they speak quickly and informally.
The lesson may then include five stages:
- We listen to or read a realistic example.
- We identify useful expressions, prepositions and stress patterns.
- The learner uses the language in a speaking task.
- You receive targeted feedback on the patterns that affect clarity and precision.
- The learner repeats the task and applies the feedback immediately.
When you work with a private Swedish tutor, the teaching can focus on the specific situations in which you need to use the language. These may range from presentations and client meetings to everyday conversations with colleagues.
You do not need to follow a general course in which everyone practises the same things. The lessons can be adapted to your level, your profession and the language patterns that you personally need to develop.
